GLENDALE, AZ – A 4-year-old girl was killed, and three others, including her 3-year-old brother, were injured after they were struck by a vehicle in a Glendale parking lot on Wednesday morning.
According to KPHO, the accident occurred outside of a Walmart located near Northern Avenue and 56th Avenue at about 10:30 a.m., when a 68-year-old woman backed her black Nissan frontier pickup truck out of a parking spot.
Her vehicle collided with another car, and then she went onto the sidewalk, colliding with a family of five who were walking towards the Walmart, before striking two other vehicles.
A 4-year-old girl was pinned and dragged beneath the pickup truck as it collided with the final two vehicles. She was taken to the hospital, but there succumbed to her injuries.
The child’s 3-year-old brother and her mother were taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
The grandmother of the victim, Latonya McFowler, sustained minor wounds and received treatment at the scene.
According to McFowler, in her final moments before the crash, the 4-year-old asked to hold her grandmother’s hand while they walked to the store.
The driver remained at the scene and has cooperated with the investigation. Authorities believe that she was borrowing the pickup from another person and that her inexperience with the vehicle may have contributed to the crash.
A GoFundMe has been created to raise money for the victim’s funeral expenses.
