Narrative

MESA, AZ – A 9-year-old and an 11-year-old sustained fatal injuries Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision along Loop 202 in Mesa.

The accident occurred in the morning on the westbound side of the Red Mountain Freeway near East McKellips Road, which is just southeast of Mesa Community College – Red Mountain Campus.

Police say that a westbound pickup truck carrying four people struck a tow truck that was parked along the shoulder of the highway.

Two children in the pickup truck died at the scene.

It’s unclear if the driver of the pickup truck and a third child passenger required hospitalization. Officials say they sustained minor injuries.

Authorities closed the westbound lanes of Loop 202 as crews conducted a preliminary investigation and worked to clear the scene.
