Man and 2 children hurt when driver crashes head-on into armored truck

PHOENIX, AZ – A driver and two children were severely injured after he collided with an armored vehicle in a possible DUI accident in Phoenix on Wednesday morning.

According to CBS 5 News, the accident occurred near the intersection of Thomas Road and 87th Avenue at about 8 a.m., when the driver of a silver sedan lost control of the vehicle as it was traveling at a high rate of speed.

He crossed over the center lines and into the lanes of oncoming traffic, where he collided head-on with an armored Garda truck.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, a 5-year-old girl, and an 11-year-old girl were trapped within the wreckage. After being extricated by emergency crews, they were taken to the hospital for the treatment of severe, critical wounds.

Authorities believe that the 29-year-old driver may have been under the influence at the time and may be facing possible charges.

The two occupants of the armored truck refused transport to the hospital.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
