TEMPE, AZ – A Tempe Police sergeant was struck by a hit-and-run driver at a reported street racing meet on Friday, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.

The accident happened on the Mill Avenue Bridge before 5 p.m., when a group of officers responding to a call noticed what appeared to be a street racing group nearby.

Multiple vehicles were reportedly parked in handicapped parking spaces without handicapped decals. When officers approached to confront the group about parking violations, a black Buick Envision SUV sped out of the handicapped spot and collided with an officer.

The driver then allegedly fled the scene at a high rate of speed and while driving in an erratic fashion, without headlights.

The officer, who was not immediately identified, received non-critical injuries in the crash.

Later, officials discovered the abandoned vehicle in question.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.
