WICKENBURG, AZ (YAVAPAI COUNTY) – Two people were killed, and five others, including a DPS Trooper, were injured in a head-on collision in Wickenburg on Friday, according to CBS 5.
The accident occurred on US-93, near milepost 172, at about 8:30 p.m., after the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban, 43-year-old Tucson woman Catherine Winegar, called the police after realizing they were low on fuel and might not make it to a gas station in time. A trooper then began to follow Winegar to the station to ensure she and her passengers would be safe.
The driver of a 2011 Honda Accord, 23-year-old Chandler resident Alexis Wilson, was driving at an unsafe speed and attempted to pass in a no-pass zone.
Wilson collided head-on with Winegar’s vehicle, causing the Chevrolet to overturn. The Accord then struck the trooper’s vehicle, trapping the officer briefly inside. The trooper was pulled from the wreckage by bystanders, and then the vehicle burst into flames.
After striking the patrol cruiser, the Accord was struck by a Toyota Corolla.
Winegar and Wilson died at the scene.
Two passengers in the Accord and two in the Chevrolet were taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
The trooper was airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
