The crash happened near the Horne Auto Collision Center in the 1500 block of E Deuce of Clubs on Saturday morning, when the 35-year-old driver of a black Ford pickup truck crashed into a group of bicyclists participating in the Bike the Bluff bicycle race. The truck then crashed into a telephone pole, and the driver then fled the scene.
Six bicyclists were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. One other bicyclist was injured and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
An additional two or three people also went to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
Authorities pursued the driver to Oliver and 3rd Drive. There the suspect, identified as White Mountain Lakes man Shawn Michael Chock, was shot by an officer. Chock was taken to the hospital with severe injuries and is said to be in stable condition.
Witnesses say that the driver intentionally accelerated into the crowd, and that bodies and bicycles were sent airborne after the accident.
No motive was given for the collision.
