Off-duty Nogales officer fatally hit by car while helping with lane closure

NOGALES, AZ – An off-duty officer with the Nogales Police Department was fatally struck by a driver near I-19 on Thursday night, according to CBS 5 News.

The crash happened on northbound I-19, near Mariposa Road, at about 8:15 p.m., as 40-year-old Ofc. Jeremy Brinton had gotten out of his vehicle to help with a lane closure. He was then struck by a driver.

Brinton was airlifted to the hospital in Tucson, and there, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident at this time.
