GLENDALE, AZ – Two people were killed in a wrong-way crash on Loop 303 in the West Valley early Friday morning, according to information from ABC 15 News.
The collision happened on the southbound loop near Bethany Home Road at about4 a.m., as the driver of a pickup truck, identified as 21-year-old Fabian Javier Grimaldo, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes. There, he crashed into an SUV.
The driver of the SUV, 61-year-old Surprise resident Brian Vaughn, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the pickup truck, 21-year-old Phoenix resident Joaquin Santiago Ruiz, was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Grimaldo was also taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Authorities suspect that he was under the influence when the crash happened, and is facing two counts of manslaughter and one count of criminal damage in connection with the collision.
According to the report, the Flux Alert system, which is a series of thermal cameras meant to detect the presence of wrong-way drivers, did not alert authorities of the incident.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
