70-year-old man killed in Laveen Village hit-and-run accident

PHOENIX, AZ – A 70-year-old man was killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident in the Laveen Village area this weekend, according to CBS 5 News.

The collision occurred on the South Mountain Freeway (Loop 202), near Southern Avenue, on Sunday afternoon, as the driver of a gold minivan, 26-year-old Marcus Xavier Castro, was reportedly swerving between lanes.

He reportedly collided with 70-year-old Douglas Lee Smith, then fled the scene on foot.

Smith was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds.

Castro is facing charges of leaving an accident with a seriously injured victim and reckless manslaughter.
